The emphasis in all year groups is to provide a broad based and balanced school curriculum which meets the requirements of the national curriculum and ensures equality of entitlement and opportunity to all our students.
Key Stage 3
Year 7 and Year 8 students are taught a balanced curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Spanish, Music, Physical Education, Performing Arts, Art, Design Technology, Geography, History and PSCHE/RE. Students are placed in sets for English, Maths and Science according to KS2 SATS results and this is reviewed regularly with standard assessments within core departments.
In Year 8, more subjects introduce sets based on standard assessments and prior learning from year 7.
Support for students with learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD) is provided by teaching assistants within mainstream lessons or as a targeted group based in the Student Support Department.
On some occasions, there is also a small amount of short term withdrawal targeted towards those individual students or small groups who most need it, delivered by a teaching assistant based in Student Support.
Key Stage 4
Students at The Garibaldi School begin their GCSE level options courses in Year 9, meaning that we have a three year Key Stage 4. All students in Key Stage 4 follow a common curriculum structure comprising a core of compulsory subjects plus a pathway of options depending on their interests and academic ability.
The core curriculum comprises:
Examination courses in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and GCSE combined Science. Some students study triple science. In addition, students have core lessons for PE and PSCHE.
Students choose to study at least one of:
- Computer Science
The PSCHE curriculum follows lessons based on statutory areas including citizenship, careers education and guidance, sex and relationships education and morals, ethics and religion.
The Key Stage 4 options curriculum provides the opportunity for students to study a range of GCSE courses alongside a choice of vocational courses such as level 2 BTEC qualifications. The GCSE courses include History, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Electronics, Geography, Triple Science, Resistant Materials and Spanish.
The choice of vocational qualifications available includes BTEC Art, BTEC Enterprise, Child Development, Finance, BTEC Performing Arts, BTEC Music, Cambridge National in Sports and in ICT. Students are required to choose a total of four option choices.
